INTRODUCTION

It is now almost exactly 50 years since I left Fyvie, after spending my primary school years in that peaceful Aberdeenshire village. On recent brief visits, I have been struck not only by the extent of change in half a century, but also by the extent to which the locals, even the older ones, seem to have forgotten how it was. So before my memory fades likewise, here are my souvenirs for posterity. Hopefully they will prompt others to add their own.

The other inspiration was the small (and rather poor quality!) photograph of Primary 6 and Primary 7 at Fyvie School in 1957. If YOU are in that group, I look forward to hearing your additions and corrections.

Annexe : Additional information has been supplied by Helen Taylor, Gordon Simpson, Charlie Copeland and others. Where it relates to one of my comments, I have tried to add it in to one of the Parts above. Where it needs more space, I’ve added it to the Journal which now exists at www.arthur-groves.com/wpfyvie. Thanks to information exchanged at the Fyvie Homecoming weekend, I am delighted that we have been able to renew contact with our former much-respected teacher Alastair Milne. He has supplied me with some notes on his life after Fyvie, and I have added them to a new additional page which is part of the Journal at
